Power Outage
The recent heavy snowfall experienced in Simcoe and Muskoka resulted in numerous power outages across our region. Whenever there is a power outage, it's important to consider the safety of our food and water.
Food
A power outage can result in certain foods becoming potentially hazardous for consumption because foods cannot be maintained at 4 C (40 F) or less. Ice bags and freezer packs can be used to help keep household refrigerators cooler for longer.
Check Keeping Food Safe During a Power Outage for more information about food safety.
Water
Those who have private wells and have been without power, and who have private treatment systems for their drinking water should ensure their system is running properly once the power is restored. Before drinking the water, flush all lines letting the water run for two minutes.
If there are concerns that the treatment system is not functioning properly, water should be boiled before drinking it. Be sure to bring the water to a rolling boil for a minimum of one minute.
